Accuris SmartBlue™ Transilluminators
Accuris SmartBlue™ Transilluminators have been developed for viewing DNA gels stained with new, safe fluorescent dyes. These new dyes, such as SmartGlow™, SYBR Green, Gel Green, have an excitation wavelength of 465-470 nm (visible blue light), and are safer to use than Ethidium Bromide.
- Blue light, safe for nucleic acids
- Uniform illumination (UI Technology)
- Optimal wavelength (465nm) for common safe stains
- Adjustable position, amber filter covers
- Optional amber viewing glasses: E4000-VG1
Safer for samples, safer for you: Accuris SmartBlue™ Transilluminators are the perfect partner for the most common safe DNA stains. These instruments emit blue light at a wavelength of 465 nm, perfect for excitation of most green fluorophors, including our Accuris’ SmartGlow™, SYBR Green, SYBR Safe, SYBR Gold, GelStar, GelGreen, to name a few. SmartBlue™ transilluminators can also work for excitation of EtBr (though fluorescence is not as bright as with UV), see our Technical Bulletin with sample images. Exposing DNA to blue wavelength does not cause molecular damage, and results in a much higher downstream cloning efficiency as compared to even short UV light exposures. In addition, the visible blue light is not damaging to the user’s skin and is less harmful to the eyes.*
Adjustable filter cover: Both the E4101 and SB4500 transilluminators come with emission filter covers. These amber covers, which rest above the viewing surface and gel, filter out the blue light, allowing the fluorescing DNA bands to be seen clearly. The covers can be set to a flat position for general gel viewing or can be set at an angle to provide easy access to the gel for band excision. The SB4500 has a two-position filter cover, and the E4101 features a hinged filter cover.
Optional amber viewing glasses: Our E4000-VG1 SmartBlue™ Plus Viewing Glasses offer efficient blocking of the blue light wavelength from the transilluminators, allowing clear visualization of the fluorescing DNA bands without the filter cover in place. These convenient glasses are recommended for users that are frequently excising DNA bands from gels. SmartBlue™ Plus glasses also block 100% of UV wavelength so they can also be used for viewing gels on a UV transilluminator.
UI technology, bright and clear images: The bright LED light plates and filter layer provides an extremely evenly lit viewing surface. Even in ambient light, bands of DNA can clearly be seen in stained gels. Images obtained using the SmartBlue™ Transilluminator are brighter and more balanced than those obtained using epi-illuminators which light from the sides.
Reliable, durable, and long-lasting: An array of super bright LEDs with a long, 30,000 hour service life provide the light source for the SmartBlue™ Transilluminators. Unlike those in a UV transilluminator, the filters in the SmartBlue™ systems will not solarize and degrade in performance over time. Gel bands can be excised directly on the scratch resistant, glass viewing surfaces. To save energy, the power switch includes an automatic 5 minute shutoff. SmartBlue™ Transilluminators are covered by a 2 year warranty.
* SmartBlue™ products use high intensity LED lights. Although the visible blue wavelength is significantly safer than UV light, it is recommended to not stare directly at the viewing surface without the amber cover in place.

Lab Armor® Bead Bath
Bead Baths from Lab Armor® are designed with the user in mind and are optimized to work with Lab Armor® Bath Beads. Bead Bath performs all the essentials, including warming, thawing, incubating, chilling and does so while maintaining a constant temperature just like a water bath. These baths deliver exceptional temperature uniformity up to 80°C. The baths are available in 6 L, 14 L, and 20 L sizes, with and without beads included.
- Uniform Temperatures
- With Bead Bath designed specifically for beads, temperatures are consistent and uniform everywhere in the bath. Thermal uniformity is an amazing ±5 °C at 37 °C and ± 1 °C at 65 °C. Since Bead Bath won't boil off like water, or pose danger of combustion like oil, it is ideal for most applications from 37°C to 400 °C.
- Fast Start
- Bead Bath gets up and running faster and you never need to turn it off. There is nothing to evaporate. Unlike a standard bead-filled water bath, Bead Bath allows you to achieve a new set temperature quickly, without long warm up delays, so you can make quick adjustments.
- Stays Organized
- Unlike water baths that require racks, floats and bottleneck weights, Bead Bath naturally holds things in place without accessories. The types and kinds of vessels that can be used with the Bead Bath aren't limited to water-tight containers. So you can safely incubate multiwall plates and petri dishes-or thaw samples without fear of water wicking under the lids. And vessels can be set into the beads at any angle for better thermal optimization.
- Low Maintenance
- Water baths must be routinely monitored, cleaned and maintained. While it is a good idea to keep an eye on Bead Bath, it rarely needs attention. A bi-weekly or monthly spritz of a biodegradable disinfectant is usually sufficient.

SmartDoc™ 2.0 Imaging System
- Imaging enclosure works with all common smartphones
- System includes blue light illumination base, orange viewing cover, and orange photo filter
- Ideal for common safe stains (SmartGlow™, SYBR Green, GelGreen™, etc.)
- Visible blue light will not damage DNA
- Gel viewing and gel access for DNA band cutting
- Optional amber viewing glasses, for band excising
- Imaging enclosure can also be used on existing transilluminators
Introducing the SmartDoc™ 2.0 (Item no. E5001-SDB). This complete system has been developed for safely viewing nucleic acids in agarose gels and for capturing quality digital images with a smartphone camera. Blue light is used instead of UV, which is safer for lab personnel and will not damage DNA samples.
The SmartDoc™ Imaging Enclosure can also be purchased separately (item no. E5000-SD) without the blue light illumination base. The enclosure by itself can be used on most existing UV transilluminators or blue light transilluminators for smart phone imaging.
The illumination base emits an intense blue light with a peak output of 460 nm for optimum excitation of nucleic acids stained with green fluorescent dyes (SYBR® Green, SmartGlow™, GelStar™, GelGreen™, etc). The orange cover fits on top of the illumination base and acts as a filter to absorb blue light, allowing visualization of the fluorescing samples. The cover can also be set at an angle for gel access and cutting out DNA bands for further study.
The SmartDoc™ imaging enclosure includes an orange photo filter for photography of the gels with a smartphone. An extending adapter can be inserted for full dimension imaging of gels up to 15 x 15 cm or removed for close-up pictures. The enclosure can also be used directly on any other existing UV or blue light transilluminator. Additional filters are available for imaging gels on a UV transilluminator. Please see our “Filter and User Guide” to show which filter is best for different imaging applications.
Optional SmartBlue™ Plus Viewing Glasses
Accuris SmartBlue™ Plus Viewing Glasses offer exceptional protection for researchers working with bright blue LED and UV light illuminators. The polycarbonate filter lenses are shatter proof, scratch resistant and block light in the UV (280 nm) to blue (490 nm) wavelengths. In addition, they are compliant with ANSI Z87.1.
These glasses are ideal for general protection when working with hazardous wavelengths and for precision DNA band cutting on a UV or blue light transilluminator. While blocking hazardous UV and blue light, the glasses allow clear visualization of DNA bands stained with Ethidium Bromide, SmartGlow™, SYBR Green and other fluorescent dyes.
*Always wear appropriate UV protection for eyes and exposed skin when working with UV light sources.
